Chapter 17

Randy looked across the parking lot at California’s Ontario airport to see his green truck with Dan beaming from ear to ear and waving for Randy to get in.

“I thought you’d enjoy a ride in your old truck. I’m surprised you didn’t rent a car, though.”

“Thanks for picking me up, Dan. This will be fun. How’s your truck running?”

“The poor old thing is on its last legs.”

“You still owe on it?”

“Paid it off last year.”

Randy spent the flight thinking up a plan. “How about we go right now and trade this one in? I’ll add enough down to get a payment you can handle. You can sell your old heap later. What do you say?”

Dan’s eyes grew enormous, and his words came slowly. “You’d do that for us?”

“Sure, what’s family for? Besides, I have the new one in Nashville. I’m making good money now, and I owe you a little something for all you do here.”

They completed the business and made the drive home in a shiny new pickup. “Randy, I can’t believe this. When I called to let Sherry know we’d be late, I almost spilled the beans.”

“Glad you didn’t. I can’t wait to see her face. You know, you have all supported me with all my crazy dreams. This is such a small payback.”

He sat in the kitchen with his mother while Dan took his family for a ride. He downed a piece of her fresh bread with lots of butter while they waited.

“Well, Mom, you look great. I can’t tell you how glad I am to be home.”

“I’ve been looking forward to this so much. Son, I know you were too busy to come, but it sure means a lot. So, tell me about your record.”

“Well, first, now they’re CDs, not vinyl records. We still say album cause, I don’t know, habit, I guess. But anyway, I think you’ll like it. There’s a couple of your favorites on there but a lot of new stuff, too. I’ve been writing.”

“How exciting. I’ve been keeping the ladies updated about you. Have you talked to Jimmy yet?”

“No, I’ll call when he gets home from school. You talk to Aunt Sylvia and tell her we’ll be over for lunch on Wednesday. How long since you saw your sister, anyway?”

“Too long. I wish she didn’t live all the way over in Glendale. Talking on the phone once a week isn’t the same. No matter how famous you get, son, don’t lose touch with your family. That’s the most important thing you have.”

Randy nodded. Her words rang true.

As she promised, the family gathered for dinner. He loved having his nephew and nieces around him. His mother rushed from kitchen to table, making sure everyone had plenty of roast beef and potatoes on their plates. After dinner, Jimmy treated them with a few simple songs on his guitar.

Impressed with his son’s new skill, Randy said to Carrie, “He’s come so far in such a short time. He must like it.”

For a moment, Carrie placed the back of her hand on her forehead in mock frustration.
